Starting a Tropical Garden From Scratch: A Season-One Plan
Alpha Tropic Seeds · 2026-04-02 · 10 min read

A practical month-by-month plan for your first tropical growing season, from soil prep to your first harvest.
Months one and two: soil and layout
Test drainage before you buy a single plant. Dig a 30 cm hole, fill it with water, and time how long it takes to drain. Anything over four hours means you should build raised beds or mounds.
Months three and four: anchor plants
Plant your largest, slowest species first — fruit trees and palms. Everything faster can be filled in around them later without disturbing established roots.
Months five and six: fill and feed
Add fast growers like banana, papaya, and heliconia for immediate structure, then settle into a consistent feeding and mulching rhythm.
