How to Water Tropical Plants Without Killing Them
Alpha Tropic Seeds · 2026-06-28 · 6 min read

More tropical plants die from drainage problems than from drought. Here is a simple watering method that works in pots and in the ground.
Water deeply, then wait
Shallow daily sips train roots to stay near the surface. Instead, water until it runs freely from the drainage holes, then wait until the top 3 cm of soil is dry before the next round.
Check with your finger, not a schedule
Light, temperature, pot material, and season all change how fast soil dries. A calendar cannot know that. Two seconds with your finger can.
Fix drainage before anything else
If a pot holds water at the bottom, no watering schedule will save the plant. Use open mixes, unobstructed drainage holes, and never leave a saucer full of standing water.
