Annona muricata L. is a tropical fruit tree in the Annonaceae family and one of the best-known edible Annona species, grown across the tropics under names such as guanábana, soursop and graviola.

Mature trees produce large green fruits with characteristic soft projections on the exterior and aromatic white pulp inside. The pulp is soft, juicy and aromatic with a distinctive sweet-tart tropical flavor.

It is widely used fresh, as well as in juices, smoothies, frozen drinks, desserts, ice creams and similar preparations.

The species is especially suitable for warm tropical climates. Growers outside tropical climates should provide protection from cold — containers, a greenhouse or another protected environment allow the plant to be moved to warmth when needed.

This listing is for one young live plant approximately 6–8 inches tall. Fruit photographs illustrate the mature species and do not represent what is included in the shipment.

Live Plant Notice

This plant has been grown in warm tropical conditions. Shipping temporarily changes its light, humidity, airflow and temperature, so minor cosmetic shipping stress may occur.

Temporary leaf drooping, slight yellowing, small leaf blemishes or the loss of an older leaf can occur after transit and does not necessarily indicate that the plant is unhealthy.

Unpack the plant promptly after delivery, and do not immediately place a recently shipped plant into intense full sun.

Avoid unnecessary immediate repotting unless the growing medium or container clearly requires it.

First 7 days

First 7 Days After Arrival

  1. 1

    Unpack promptly

Carefully remove the plant and shipping materials soon after delivery.

  2. 2

    Inspect the plant

Check the leaves, stem, growing medium and moisture level.

  3. 3

    Check moisture before watering

Do not automatically water simply because the plant arrived in the mail. If the growing medium is still adequately moist, wait. If it is becoming dry, water thoroughly and allow excess water to drain.

  4. 4

    Begin with bright filtered light

Place the plant in bright indirect or filtered light during its initial recovery.

  5. 5

    Acclimate gradually

Over approximately 7–14 days, gradually introduce the plant to stronger sunlight depending on your local climate and growing conditions.

  6. 6

    Avoid immediate heavy fertilization

Allow the plant to recover from shipping before applying strong fertilizer.

  7. 7

    Monitor new growth

New growth is one of the best indications that the plant has acclimated successfully.

Light

Established Annona muricata trees perform well with abundant sunlight, but a newly shipped young plant should not move directly from a shipping box into intense tropical afternoon sun.

Start in bright filtered light and increase exposure gradually over roughly one to two weeks, introducing gentler morning sun first.

Watering

  • Water thoroughly rather than applying tiny amounts frequently.
  • Allow excess water to escape through drainage holes.
  • Maintain appropriate moisture while avoiding continuously saturated soil.
  • Check the growing medium rather than watering solely according to a fixed calendar.
  • Young container plants may require more frequent monitoring during hot weather.

Soil & Drainage

  • Fertile soil with plenty of organic matter.
  • Good drainage at every stage of growth.
  • A quality tropical-fruit potting mix for container culture.
  • Good drainage is especially important in containers, where water cannot escape sideways.

Repotting

Do not automatically transplant the plant immediately after shipping — allow it to acclimate first whenever possible.

When repotting becomes necessary, move up gradually to a somewhat larger container rather than placing a very small root system into an excessively large pot. The container must have drainage holes.

Temperature & Cold Protection

Annona muricata is distinctly tropical and cold sensitive. A practical preferred growing range is approximately 68–86°F.

Protect young plants from frost, cold winds and prolonged low temperatures. Growers in colder climates should consider containers, greenhouses or protected environments so the plant can be moved to warmth when necessary. This plant is not frost hardy.

Fertilization

Wait until the plant has recovered from shipping before beginning fertilizer.

Once it is settled and growing, use an appropriate balanced fertilizer for tropical fruit plants according to the manufacturer's directions. Avoid excessive fertilizer on very young or recently shipped plants.

Long-Term Growing

  • Annona muricata eventually develops into a small-to-medium tropical fruit tree, and can be kept smaller through appropriate pruning and management.
  • Provide warm temperatures and abundant light after acclimation.
  • Provide adequate water with good drainage and fertile soil.
  • Allow sufficient root space, stepping up containers gradually.
  • Protect the plant from damaging cold.
  • Tropical fruit-tree pruning can be used to maintain a more manageable canopy. Time to fruit depends on seedling age, genetics, climate and growing conditions, so no fruiting timeline is promised.
