Artocarpus camansi is the tree known in Puerto Rico as Pana de Pepitas or Pana de Semilla. ‘Seeded Breadfruit’ is also used because of its close relationship to breadfruit and the conspicuous seeds inside each mature fruit.

That common name can cause confusion. Artocarpus camansi is a distinct species from Artocarpus altilis, the familiar commonly seedless breadfruit grown mainly for starchy flesh.

Breadnut becomes a vigorous tropical tree with broad, deeply divided foliage and distinctive textured fruit. Its mature seeds have traditional food relevance and are cooked before eating; planting seeds are offered here for propagation, not consumption.

Freshness matters because these tropical seeds are not suited to prolonged dry storage. Prepare the propagation medium before opening the package and sow promptly.

Fresh Tropical Seed Notice

Breadnut seed is moisture-sensitive and should be sown promptly rather than intentionally dried or held for long storage.

These are planting seeds, not prepared food. Mature Breadnut seeds used as food are cooked before eating.

Germination, survival and eventual fruiting depend on handling and growing conditions and are not guaranteed.

Seed to young tree

Starting Fresh Artocarpus camansi Seed

  1. 1

    Prepare before opening

Fill individual deep containers with a clean, airy medium so the seeds can move from packing to soil without unnecessary exposure or drying.

  2. 2

    Inspect and clean gently

Remove remaining fruit material with clean water. Do not abrade, crack or intentionally dry the seed coat.

  3. 3

    Sow promptly

Set each seed on its side or with any visible root directed downward, then cover only shallowly—roughly one seed thickness.

  4. 4

    Settle and drain

Water the medium thoroughly once, allow it to drain, then maintain stable moisture without leaving the container saturated.

  5. 5

    Provide tropical warmth

Keep containers warm, sheltered and out of harsh sun. Cool wet soil slows growth and increases decay risk.

  6. 6

    Follow the shoot

As roots establish, a shoot unfolds into broad juvenile leaves. Move emerged seedlings into bright filtered light and strengthen exposure gradually.

  7. 7

    Transplant with the root ball

When roots occupy the starter pot and growth is active, move up one container size without breaking apart the root system.

CORRECT ✓

Fresh seed sown promptly and shallowly in a warm, clean, airy medium kept evenly moist with free drainage.

AVOID ✕

Dry storage, deep burial, cold saturated soil, damaged emerging roots or harsh direct sun on new seedlings.

The Breadnut Behind Pana de Pepitas

A mature Artocarpus camansi fruit contains numerous large seeds, giving the Puerto Rican names Pana de Pepitas and Pana de Semilla their practical meaning.

The textured fruit shown in the gallery identifies the mature species. Your package contains ten seeds, not fruit.

Camansi, Not Seedless Altilis

Artocarpus camansi and Artocarpus altilis are close relatives, but they are not interchangeable names. Camansi is the seed-bearing Breadnut offered here; altilis is the familiar breadfruit commonly cultivated in seedless forms for its starchy flesh.

Keeping the botanical name attached to the packet prevents a young seedling from being sold under the wrong expectation.

Freshness Is Part of Propagation

These are tropical seeds rather than dry, shelf-stable garden seed. Avoid unnecessary waiting, refrigeration and drying. A prepared medium, steady warmth and prompt sowing give the embryo a continuous transition from fruit to root growth.

Do not chase moisture with constant watering. A damp but aerated mix supports the seed; stagnant saturation excludes oxygen.

From Broad Leaves to a Large Tree

Early seedlings develop broad tropical foliage and can progress through increasingly deep containers. Acclimate leaves to stronger light in stages and protect the young stem from cold or drying wind.

In a frost-free tropical setting, an established tree needs generous permanent space away from buildings, overhead lines and other constraints. Container culture is useful while young but does not change the species’ long-term scale.

The Live-Plant Alternative

Growers who prefer to begin beyond the seed stage can choose the existing Artocarpus camansi live-plant listing. The seed and live-plant products use this same species-level guide rather than separate, conflicting instructions.
