Inga spectabilis is a tropical fruit tree in the Fabaceae family, valued for its impressive large green pods containing dark seeds surrounded by a soft, white, edible aril.
The edible white pulp is sweet, mild and aromatic. Its flavor is commonly compared to vanilla, cotton candy or ice cream — which is where the popular English name Ice Cream Bean comes from.
Native to tropical regions of Mexico, Central America and northern and western South America, it is an interesting species for collectors, tropical gardeners and growers of unusual edible plants. Under suitable tropical conditions it can eventually develop into a substantial tree.

Fresh Seed Notice
Inga seeds are highly freshness-sensitive tropical seeds. They should be planted as soon as possible after delivery and should not be allowed to dry completely.
The seeds are shipped with moist vermiculite to help maintain appropriate moisture during transit. The vermiculite should be moist — but this does not mean the seeds should be planted in saturated or waterlogged soil.
If a seed arrives already beginning to sprout, this is not necessarily a problem. Very fresh Inga seeds can begin germinating quickly. If a root has already emerged, handle it carefully and plant the seed immediately.
Germination
How to Germinate Inga spectabilis Seeds
- 1
Plant immediately
Plant the seeds as soon as possible after receiving them. Do not intentionally dry the seeds before planting. If a seed has already started developing a root, handle the root carefully and plant immediately.
- 2
Prepare the container
Use a small pot or seedling container with adequate drainage holes.
- 3
Prepare the growing medium
Use a rich but well-draining growing medium that retains moisture without remaining waterlogged. A quality potting mix amended with a drainage material such as perlite works well.
- 4
Seed position — very important
Do not completely bury the seed. Plant very shallowly: place the seed so the point where the root emerges is directed downward and in contact with the growing medium. Roughly the lower half of the seed should sit in or against the medium while the upper portion stays visible above the surface.
- 5
Watering
Water thoroughly after planting and allow excess water to drain. Afterward keep the growing medium consistently moist but not continuously saturated. Do not allow a newly planted fresh seed to dry completely.
- 6
Temperature
Keep the seed in a warm environment. A practical target range of approximately 75–85°F (24–29°C) provides appropriate warmth for germination.
- 7
Light
During germination provide bright indirect light, filtered light or light shade. Protect newly germinating seeds from intense direct afternoon sunlight.
- 8
Germination
Very fresh Inga spectabilis seeds may germinate quickly — often in approximately 1–2 weeks under suitable moisture, warmth and shade. Actual timing varies with seed freshness, temperature and growing conditions.
CORRECT ✓
Seed approximately half exposed above the soil, with the emerging root directed downward into the growing medium.
AVOID ✕
Seed completely buried several centimeters beneath the soil.
The Fruit
Inga spectabilis produces large tropical pods containing seeds surrounded by a soft white edible pulp (aril).
The pulp is sweet, mild, soft and aromatic, and its flavor is often associated with vanilla, cotton candy or ice cream. Flavor can naturally vary between individual trees and growing conditions.
After Germination
- Maintain evenly moist soil.
- Gradually introduce brighter light.
- Protect young seedlings from intense sunlight until acclimated.
- Avoid excessive fertilizer while seedlings are very young.
- Protect seedlings from cold temperatures.
- Allow the root system to establish before moving the plant into a substantially larger container.
- Gradually acclimate the plant to stronger sunlight.
Long-Term Growing
Inga spectabilis is a tropical tree and should eventually be given adequate growing space. It performs best under warm, humid conditions with adequate moisture and fertile, well-draining soil.
In colder climates, young plants should be protected from frost and may require container growing, greenhouse protection or another protected environment.
Shipping and Seed Care
Seeds are shipped with moist vermiculite to help preserve appropriate moisture during transit. Shipping is free.
Because these are living biological materials, individual seed appearance and germination timing can naturally vary. For best results, plant immediately after arrival.
